Over the past 6 weeks, the Friends of Newport Skatepark have been diligently and passionately working with Spohn Ranch in designing the BEST skatepark for the surrounding community. We are thoroughly excited to share with you those plans today – but first a quick update.

This idea started as a Roger's High School senior project almost 10 years ago. In 2023, Friends of Newport Skatepark hit its fundraising goal. It was a community driven effort – from grassroots events; Foundational giving; in-kind product; time; effort; love; and much more. We as a community can’t thank each and every person and business who have supported this effort throughout the process.

As of this week the plans attached were submitted to the Rhode Island Interlocal Trust. The Trust is a member-owned (cities and municipalities), risk-sharing organization, legislatively created, to enable Rhode Island municipalities, school districts, and special purpose districts to work cooperatively and self-insure their risks.

NEXT STEPS:

On Tuesday, February 27 at 6pm these same plans will be presented to Newport’s Tree and Open Space Commission. We would appreciate any and all support at this meeting. This open meeting is held at:

Tree and Open Space Commission

Tuesday, February 27th, 2024

6:00-7:30 pm

Newport Recreation Department (The Hut Facility)

35 Golden Hill Road, Newport, RI

Depending on the discussion with the Tree and Open Space Commission, the plans would then be put in front of the Newport City Council. Date is to be determined, but expect a similar notice once that date is set. Once we have approval from both the City of Newport and the Interlocal Trust on the design and plans, we can break ground on the project.

Which, if all goes to plan, will be in April.

⭐️ This would put the skatepark on schedule to open in August! 📅

🥁 DRUM ROLL PLEASE!

Below you’ll find the architectural designs for Newport’s Skatepark!  We hope you are as excited to see the endless possibilities.

⭐️ Here are a Few Highlights! ⭐️

  • Size: approx. 19,000 sq. feet

  • The area is split with 7,000 sq. feet of bowl and includes a 3-foot-deep kiddie bowl

  • 10,000 sq. feet of the park is for street style skating and provides incredible flow throughout

  • The remaining 2,000 sq. feet is open space for picnic tables, etc. within the park.

We appreciate all the support and look forward to providing future updates as we progress.

Lastly, we are continuing to passively fundraise throughout the design and early build phases. These funds will help add additional amenities to the park and surrounding area as well as start to build a fund for what could become programming in the future. Please continue to spread the word, host an event, and/or purchase a brick.

In addition, we encourage you to either follow us on social @FriendsofNewportSkate Park or subscribe to our newsletter at www.friendsofnewportskatepark.com to stay up-to-date on information and timing.

"A sincere thank you to everyone who participated in the raffle throughout the month. Very proud of the contribution we were able to make - blew my expectations out of the water.

The crew behind the scenes at F.O.N.S. is doing a great job. It was exciting to build a board to back this project.

Thank you to the crew at Space Rock, building quality boards every day and Tyler for all these cool photos.

See everyone at the skatepark!"
